Local hair salon Gel Salon has decided to commemorate King and his speech by having a mural of King painted on the side of the salon’s building. Gel Salon, located on Park Ave., is co-owned by James Carducci and his wife Missy, and they have been in business over ten years.

GEL SALON'S MLK WALL MURAL

“Music is everything. It’s how I vent, it’s how I get things off of my chest, it’s how I free my mind. It’s that feeling you get that makes you sing and dance to your favorite song, that feeling when you hear it come on in the club, that passion that’s expressed and how you feel when you hear it. When I create music, I don’t worry how other people will view or judge it, because at the end of the day my music is like a big diary. When I’m done writing my mind is clear, I feel relieved and I can go on with my life. I also get to sing and dance to it when I hear it too. There’s no better feeling than sitting in the studio and hearing a banger that you just created.”

I like to call myself a microwave woman. I like things to move and to happen fast and I’m extremely impatient. Not one of my best qualities, I’ll admit. Chalk it up to being from the city, I guess. But I hate to wait for anything. If something doesn’t happen at the exact time that I want it to or for planned for it to, I become very frustrated.

Borrowing a phrase from Kirk Franklin’s 2001 hit song, last Tuesday for most was definitely a ‘Lovely Day’ as Lovely Warren sealed her bid for Rochester’s highest office.

It was a sweet victory for Warren after a long drama-filled election process. She received 18,000 votes, 55% to beat out incumbent mayor Tom Richards who received 40% of the votes. Green Party candidate Alex White came in a distant third place with 5% of the votes.

GENERATION OUTREACH - #REMEMBEROCTOBER 31 DAYS OF KINDESS
Music is Therapy

Generation Outreach, a local organization owned and operated by Justin Ortiz, has held a different event every Saturday during the month of October as part of his “#RememberOctober - 31 Days of Kindness” event series. Each event was given an event title and centered on a theme of community service and involvement. The last event of the month, held this past Saturday afternoon, was called Makeover Express.

Relax. Breathe. Slow down. Stop. Take a break. These are all words that are deeply undervalued in today’s society. Everything and everyone is so fast paced. Today is all about living fast, dying young, no rest for the weary and the phrase made popular by rapper Lil Wayne, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”
